CREATURES OF THE SPRING EQUINOX
Debut exhibit by Carmen Paola Redunante
Carmen Paola Redunante is a developing artist. Carmen has Indigenous roots from Chile on her mother's side. On her fathers side she is Nisga'a from the village of Gingolx, and her paternal grandfather is Tsimshian from Lax Kw’alaams. Carmen is very passionate about the environment and looks for creative ways to incorporate beauty and hidden messages in her work. She hopes to bring awareness to help preserve our Forests, Animals, and Water.
About the showcase:
In Nisga’a legends and oral story telling, exists many creation stories. Each story connects a being to a lesson or historical moment. In one specific creation story that I uncovered during my process of reconnection to my identity, I learned about 2 supernatural beings who travelled to the sky world to meet with the great sky chief. On this journey they were to pass through each kingdom that belonged to a specific animal. From the smallest creature to the largest. Each kingdom carried valuable teachings, but within this story it was mentioned that most of the creature’s stories were lost… do the impacts of colonization and intergenerational trauma. This realization of lost stories belonging to our animal relatives struck me deeply. I am now inspired to create animal crests for creatures that come across my path in a significant way. In hopes that I can bring meaning to their existence and help shift importance to preserve their environment.
