More About Gig:
My English name is Gregory N. Williams, Haida name is K’aajuu G’aaya from the Skedans Clan of the Haida Nation. Im a Tattoo Artist - Musician - Jeweller (Haida) for 20 years in silver, gold and copper. I learned to tattoo under the strict guidance of Mark Paroyan in 2009.
I have been tattooing since 2011 in Daajing Giids, Haida Gwaii at Haida Inkk Tattoo Shop www.haidainkk.ca
Focusing on Haida formline and realism, I continue to study and absorb knowledge of tattooing from Indigenous tattoo mentors, Dion Kaszas from the Salish Nation www.consumedbyink.com, Haida/Tlingit artist Nahaan www.indigenousresistance.com
In March 2020, I was invited by the Maori to attend Wânanga Indigenous, a week long tattoo workshop and two day convention in Tauranga New Zealand . Workshops put on by some of the Indigenous tattoo artists from New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, Fiji, Philippines, Japan, US, and Canada. Workshops that offered traditional/contemporary methods from Indigenous artist with vast histories in tattooing techniques. The humbling experience elevated me to become a better person, artist and want to share the best version of my art with you.
I have been featured in a short documentary called ‘This Ink Runs Deep’, about the resurgence and revitalization of Indigenous tattoo artists - it features artists using traditional tattooing methods and those of us who use modern tools and techniques to tell stories and legends of our people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2Mm_p1469I that was released at the Toronto International Film Festival.
For me, tattoos can connect a person to their culture and history, to life in the present, and to dreams for the future. When I practice this art form, I’m tattooing a part of a person soul into their skin, to be shared with the world.
I am humbled and excited to be doing a guest spot, learning from the great artists at Liquid Amber Tattoo & Art Collective.
